New Zealand’s New 6-Month Graduate Work Visa: Eligibility, Benefits & What Students Need to Know

New Zealand is introducing a new 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa for eligible international graduates from November 2026. Discover the eligibility requirements, work rights, key benefits and what Indian students should know when planning their studies and post-study career in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s New 6-Month Graduate Work Visa: Eligibility, Benefits & What Students Need to Know

Introduction

New Zealand continues to attract Indian students who want to gain an international qualification, experience a new education system and explore career opportunities after graduation. However, one of the biggest concerns for international students is what happens after completing their studies, particularly if their qualification does not make them eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV).

To address this gap, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, which will provide eligible international graduates with up to six months of open work rights.

Announced on 10 September 2026, this new visa is scheduled to open for applications on 16 November 2026. It is designed to give eligible graduates additional time to look for employment and explore longer-term work options in New Zealand.

For students planning to study in New Zealand, this is an important development to understand before selecting a course or planning their post-study journey.

What Is New Zealand’s New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa?

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a new temporary work visa for eligible international students who complete a qualifying New Zealand qualification but do not qualify for the existing Post-Study Work Visa.

Under this visa, eligible graduates can stay in New Zealand and work for up to six months while searching for employment and exploring suitable longer-term work visa options.

Unlike certain work visas that require a job offer from a specific employer, this visa provides open work rights, meaning eligible holders can work in any job for any employer during the visa period, subject to the visa's conditions.

The visa is intended to create a short-term opportunity for graduates to enter the job market, gain work experience and potentially transition to another appropriate visa if they meet its requirements.

Who Is Eligible for the New 6-Month Graduate Work Visa?

While the new visa creates an additional opportunity for international graduates, it is not automatically available to every student completing a course in New Zealand.

Applicants must satisfy the qualification, visa history, financial and other immigration requirements established by INZ.

1. Complete an Eligible New Zealand Qualification

Applicants must have successfully completed a qualification at Level 5, 6 or 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).

Be studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.

Not be an English-language, foundation or bridging qualification.

Not be a micro-credential.

Not already make the applicant eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa.

An important point for students is that this visa is intended for graduates who do not qualify for the existing Post-Study Work Visa. If your qualification already makes you eligible for a PSWV, you cannot choose the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa as an alternative.

Additionally, applicants must have completed the qualification associated with their student visa. Simply enrolling in a course or completing an unrelated qualification may not satisfy the requirements.

2. Apply Within the Required Timeframe

Applicants must have held a valid New Zealand student visa within the three months before applying for the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.

The application must be submitted no later than three months after the end date of the relevant student visa.

This makes it important for students to plan their application well before their current visa expires, rather than waiting until the final weeks to explore their options.

3. Show Sufficient Financial Funds

Applicants must demonstrate that they have access to at least NZD $5,000 to support themselves during their stay.

This requirement helps ensure that graduates can meet their living expenses while looking for work or exploring other visa options.

Applicants should prepare acceptable financial evidence, such as a recent bank statement showing their name and available balance. INZ does not accept screenshots as proof of funds.

4. Meet Other Immigration Requirements

In addition to the above criteria, applicants must:

Meet applicable health and character requirements.

Have a genuine reason for coming to New Zealand.

Not have previously been granted a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.

Not have previously been granted a Post-Study Work Visa.

The visa is a one-time opportunity and cannot be extended or granted again.

What Are the Benefits of the New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa?

The introduction of this visa may provide several practical benefits for eligible international graduates.

1. Additional Time to Search for Employment

Graduates can use the six-month period to apply for jobs, attend interviews, connect with employers and explore career opportunities that match their qualifications and skills.

2. Open Work Rights

Eligible visa holders can work in any job for any employer in New Zealand. This flexibility may help graduates support themselves while exploring employment opportunities.

3. Opportunity to Explore Longer-Term Work Visas

Graduates may use this period to explore whether they qualify for a longer-term work visa, such as an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). However, transitioning requires meeting the separate visa requirements.

4. A Short-Term Bridge After Graduation

For students who do not qualify for a PSWV, this visa creates an additional option to remain in New Zealand temporarily after completing their eligible studies, instead of having no graduate work visa option under these routes.

These benefits are based on the visa's announced work conditions. The six-month visa does not guarantee a job, a longer-term work visa or residence in New Zealand.

Can Students Transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa?

One of the key purposes of the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is to give eligible graduates time to explore longer-term work opportunities.

During the six-month period, graduates may look for employment with an accredited employer and explore whether they meet the requirements for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

However, holding a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa does not automatically qualify someone for an AEWV. Applicants must independently meet the relevant requirements, including the applicable job offer, employer accreditation, job and skill requirements.

Graduates should also ensure that they apply for another visa before their existing visa expires if they intend to remain in New Zealand.

Short-Term Graduate Work Visa vs Post-Study Work Visa

Students should understand that the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is not replacing New Zealand's existing Post-Study Work Visa.

The Post-Study Work Visa may provide a longer period of work rights for eligible graduates, whereas the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa provides a temporary option for a different group.

Important for students planning a master's degree: Do not assume that a six-month graduate visa is the only option available after completing your studies. Eligible Master's graduates may qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to three years, subject to the applicable requirements.

Can You Bring Your Family on This Visa?

Immigration New Zealand allows Short-Term Graduate Work Visa holders to support visitor visa applications for their partner and dependent children, subject to the relevant requirements.

However, family members cannot be included in the graduate's own visa application, and they cannot obtain work or student visas based on their relationship to the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa holder.

Students planning to bring their family should therefore consider these limitations while preparing their post-study plans.

What Should Indian Students Do Before Applying?

For Indian students planning to study in New Zealand, understanding post-study work options should be part of the course-selection process.

Here are a few important steps to consider:

Check your course eligibility: Confirm the NZQCF level, study duration and whether your intended qualification may qualify you for a Post-Study Work Visa or the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.

Understand the visa conditions: Do not select a course based solely on the availability of a six-month work visa.

Plan your finances: Consider tuition fees, living costs and the financial requirements for any future visa application.

Keep your documents ready: Maintain your qualification certificate, academic transcript, student visa details and financial evidence.

Explore career opportunities early: Research your industry, potential employers and the requirements for longer-term work visas before completing your studies.

A well-planned study journey involves more than gaining admission to a university. Understanding the available visa routes can help students make informed decisions about their education and future career plans.

Final Thoughts

New Zealand's new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, opening for applications on 16 November 2026, is an important development for eligible international graduates who do not qualify for the existing Post-Study Work Visa.

With up to six months of open work rights, the visa provides additional time to explore employment and possible longer-term work options in New Zealand. However, it is a temporary visa with specific eligibility requirements, and it does not guarantee employment or a pathway to residence.

For students planning to study in New Zealand, the key is to select the right qualification, understand the applicable post-study work options and plan ahead.
